An industrial building becomes an art platform: the Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe combines regional tradition with the international present - and opens up spaces for art, ideas and encounters.
The Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe is the art museum for modern and contemporary art in the city of Karlsruhe. In one of the largest industrial monuments in Germany - the former Hallenbau A at Lorenzstraße 27 - it has been offering a diverse exhibition experience on three floors since 1997. Its collection displays art from the 19th century to the present day, with a particular focus on art from Karlsruhe and the southwest of Germany as well as German art after 1945. Works from the city's own collection and an important private collection (the Garnatz Collection) form the foundation on which special exhibitions regularly provide new impetus.
The architecture of the former industrial building gives the museum its special character: generous window areas, open spaces and an industrial structure turn the building itself into an experience space. In this environment, art is not only presented, but can be experienced - as a conversation with space, time and society. A wide range of educational and participatory activities complement the exhibition program: workshops, lectures, family formats and activities for school classes open up the museum to all age groups and invite visitors to actively discover art.
Visitors to the Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe enter a place where past and present meet, where art is anchored in the city and networked internationally, and where sight, voice and space interact.
