In the middle of Theodor-Heuss-Platz, the Stadttheater Bremerhaven is an impressive four-genre theater that has played a major role in shaping the cultural identity of the seaside city since it was founded in 1867. The current building dates back to 1911, designed by theater architect Oskar Kaufmann, and combines the ornate Art Nouveau elements in its historical core, which were carefully preserved after the reconstruction in the early 1950s.

A varied program unfolds in the 685-seat Great House, the Small House and the JUB (Junges Theater Bremerhaven) - which was recently established as a stage for children and young people - as well as in external venues around the city. Operas, operettas, musicals, plays, ballets and children's theater alternate and create space for experimental and classical theater alike. The renowned Low German stage "Waterkant", which cultivates the local language and tradition and is unique in northern Germany, is also very special.

In recent years, the venue has received several awards: in 2015, it was awarded the German Federal Theatre Prize, in 2016 it was once again recognized as one of the best theaters outside the major cultural metropolises, and most recently an opera production was nominated for the German Theatre Prize "Der Faust". This underlines the artistic quality that inspires both audiences and critics.

The Stadttheater is much more than just a venue for classical performances: Since 2023, the "summer stage" directly in front of the theater has been providing lively outdoor culture - with open-air theater, readings, concerts and performances in conjunction with the city library and art gallery. The experience inside the building is also a top priority: Modernized rehearsal stages and state-of-the-art stage technology provide the best conditions for the ensembles. At the same time, a dedicated support association has been working since the 1970s to secure the building as a central cultural venue.

The management team around artistic director Lars Tietje and general music director Marc Niemann also focuses on innovative ideas for the repertoire - such as music theater for young ears or musical children's pieces - which open up the traditional institution to new target groups and make Bremerhaven a vibrant cultural location. Anyone entering the Stadttheater Bremerhaven is immersed in a world that combines classical aesthetics with contemporary impulses, that unites local tradition with international standards - and where culture comes very close to the city's public. A place where history, diversity and inspiration come alive.
