A center of great theater history - the Staatstheater Meiningen combines European stage reform, sonorous musical tradition and a lively present in a house that has been setting standards for over 190 years.

The Staatstheater Meiningen looks back on an important history that extends far beyond the borders of Thuringia. Founded in 1831 as the Ducal Court Theatre, the house underwent a radical reform from 1866 onwards during the reign of George II of Saxe-Meiningen: the focus was on the acting ensemble, which broke new ground under his direction with historical accuracy, detailed sets and a consistent ensemble concept. These principles quickly became the model for modern director's theater.

The Große Haus at Bernhardstraße 5, one of Germany's classic theater buildings, is architecturally striking. In addition to the music and theater operations, the building is home to the traditional Meiningen Court Orchestra, whose origins date back to 1690 and which is one of the oldest orchestras of its kind. Today's repertoire includes plays, musical theater, concerts, ballet and puppet theater. The broad stylistic spectrum builds bridges from classical music to contemporary innovation, underlining the theater's role as a cultural driving force in the region.

A visit to the Staatstheater Meiningen is not just about seeing a performance - it means experiencing a piece of theater history that impressively combines the past, aesthetics and lively performance culture.
