The Sudeten German Museum Munich is an impressive cultural and historical building directly on the banks of the Isar in the Au district and complements the neighboring Sudeten German House.
It was opened in October 2020 and is dedicated to the fate of the German-speaking population in Bohemia, Moravia and Sudeten Silesia - with a permanent exhibition covering around 1,200 m² and five levels that tells over 1,100 years of local history. Under the motto "Heimat!", visitors encounter cultural, religious and economic environments before 1945, experience political upheaval, war, expulsion and the difficult new beginning in Germany. Around 900 historical objects, over 30 media stations and a modern, trilingual exhibition concept bring history to life.

The striking museum was designed by pmp Architekten and impresses with its monolithic sandstone façade, which is closed towards the street and opens up towards the slope with sculptural incisions made of brass and glass - a modern response building that blends in sensitively with its surroundings. Inside, the ambience is characterized by polygonal room shapes, warm materials such as brass-coloured metal shafts and dark oak parquet flooring as well as an integrated bistro. As a central regional museum, it is unique in the world and promotes encounters, dialog and reflection - for example with workshops, lectures and an annual "Sudeten German Dialogues" series. Temporary exhibitions in the adjoining gallery show current cultural and historical themes.
For visitors, the museum is not only an aesthetic eye-catcher with modern architecture, but also a place of emotional engagement - an inspiring destination for anyone who wants to explore Central Europe's history and the themes of homeland, displacement and new beginnings. Thanks to its location above the Isar, a visit can be wonderfully combined with a walk along the river.
