An impressive piece of urban culture on over 14,000 m²: since 1963, the Bauhaus-inspired ensemble has united theater, concerts, conferences and trade fairs under one roof.
The 120-metre-long façade with its cubic structure and light-flooded rooms is a striking architectural highlight. Two independent halls allow parallel events to be held at the highest level. The Pina Bausch Hall has 720 seats, the Large Concert Hall 1,008 and the Small Concert Hall around 200.
A special feature of the building is the targeted combination of architecture and fine art: one percent of the building sum was invested in art during construction. On display are large-format works in the foyer, a monumental copper relief in the concert area, a bronze sculpture group in the inner courtyard and artistically designed door handles at the main entrance - all works are by regional artists and fit seamlessly into the clear design language of the building. The Theater & Konzerthaus was built to replace the Stadthalle, which was destroyed by fire in 1957. The new building was designed by architect Hans Joachim Budeit. The ground-breaking ceremony took place in 1960, and the building was officially opened just three years later - realized by over a hundred companies and supported by a strong local cultural will.
