The Volkstheater Rostock is the Hanseatic city's colorful four-section theater and has a lasting impact on the cultural life of the region.
With its venues - the Grosses Haus, the Kleine Komödie in Warnemünde, the Ateliertheater and, in the summer months, Halle 207 on the old Neptunwerft site - it offers the entire spectrum of performing arts: from opera, music theater and ballet to plays, concerts and its own puppet theater. The Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock provides musical highlights, accompanied by children's and youth projects, an open stage and numerous participatory formats.
Tradition and change define the house: originally opened in 1895 as a municipal theater in neoclassical style and re-housed in the former Philharmonie hall after its destruction in 1942, the ensemble has developed into a permanent ensemble with around 250 participants. Around 700 events take place every year - including classics, innovative in-house productions, guest performances and workshops. Intensive cultural education, cooperation with schools and social initiatives make the theater a social meeting place.
An exciting new building with modern architecture at the city harbor is already underway and will replace the main theater from 2028. With its ensemble, philharmonic orchestra and numerous event formats, the Volkstheater Rostock today stands for diversity, participation and artistic dynamism - a lively place where culture can be experienced.
