Following the acclaimed cycle of rare operas from the early 20th century, which concluded with Respighi's LA FIAMMA, Christof Loy brings a jewel of Italian verismo to the Deutsche Oper Berlin with FEDORA. The multi-award-winning director, recently honored once again with the International Opera Award, dissects the title character in all its complexity, weaves a finely woven web of relationships and convinces with precise character direction - supported by Herbert Murauer's stage and costume design. After successes in Stockholm and Frankfurt, FEDORA can now be seen in Berlin for the first time.

Umberto Giordano's FEDORA moves between political thriller and crime drama, tragic romantic drama and psychological chamber play. It was based on the play of the same name by Victorien Sardou - the same playwright who inspired Puccini's TOSCA. The premiere in 1898 at the Teatro Lirico in Milan became a music-historical event and established the fame of Enrico Caruso, who wrote opera history with the aria "Amor ti vieta". FEDORA soon conquered stages from Vienna to New York and is considered Giordano's greatest success alongside ANDREA CHÉNIER.

With a lush sound and haunting melodies, the opera tells the story of a worldly elite whose private entanglements lead to political abysses. When Fedora loses her fiancé in a gunfight, she follows the suspected murderer to Paris - but instead of revenge, she finds truth and love. Too late she realizes the consequences of her actions, and in the loneliness of the Swiss Alps the only way out is death.
