To mark the 500th birthday of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, the Tallis Scholars under the direction of Peter Phillips are dedicating a special concert project to the most important composer of the High Renaissance. Over three evenings in the Pierre Boulez Saal Berlin, they will perform not only a selection of his impressive mass settings and motets, but also works by his musical contemporaries - in a lively dialog about styles, epochs and spiritual expressiveness.
With more than 100 mass settings and countless motets, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-1594) brought polyphonic vocal music of the High Renaissance to an artistic peak, which shortly after his death became the epitome of an entire musical epoch as the "Palestrina style". 500 years after his birth, the Tallis Scholars and Peter Phillips, who have been intimately familiar with Palestrina's work for decades, celebrate the composer in three concerts and in dialog with his contemporaries Orlando di Lasso, Tomás Luis de Victoria and Claudio Monteverdi.
