Our world is made up of writing. Every day, from morning to night, we are surrounded by writing, letters and signs; we take it so much for granted that we never really think about it. Yet writing is one of the most fundamental and important inventions in the history of mankind.
The family-friendly experience exhibition at the German Newspaper Museum shows how much writing shapes our everyday lives: at home, at school, at work and in our free time, in the street scene, on our clothes, on the computer or on the smartphone. Writing is everywhere! Many people even have writing on their own skin in the form of tattoos. Visitors to the exhibition are encouraged to become more aware of writing in everyday life, to pay attention to the countless different fonts and to ask themselves what effect they have. Last but not least, visitors will also learn the basics about writing and typography, and about the history of writing from the early civilizations to today's digital age.
What characterizes our writing? How can blind people read? Is it true that our handwriting allows us to draw conclusions about our character? Why did people learn a completely different handwriting 100 years ago? Can symbols (emojis) replace writing? The special exhibition at the German Newspaper Museum answers these questions and many more.
