The Stuttgart State Opera is a world-class opera house - with classical splendor, an award-winning ensemble and a repertoire that combines tradition and the present in a unique way.
The Stuttgart State Opera stands impressively in the Upper Palace Gardens. The neoclassical building was built between 1909 and 1912 according to plans by Max Littmann and is today the only opera house of early 20th century architecture in Germany to have been preserved in its original state. With 1,404 seats, excellent acoustics and a clear view from all seats, the Grosses Haus remains a place of musical excellence to this day.
The State Opera enjoys an outstanding international reputation. It has been named "Opera House of the Year" several times and its choir regularly holds the title of "Opera Choir of the Year". The house is also famous for its ensemble culture: instead of changing star appearances, Stuttgart relies on continuous collaboration, which lends depth and authenticity to the repertoire. The State Opera is part of the Württemberg State Theatres, the largest three-division house in Germany. Opera, drama and ballet operate under one organizational roof, but with independent artistic directors. This structure opens up space for bold decisions, new formats and an exceptionally varied repertoire. With projects such as the "Young Opera in the North" (JOiN), new approaches are created that make musical theater accessible to children, young people and people without classical opera experience.
In addition to cultivating the major opera repertoire, the focus is on contemporary works, world premieres and new interpretations, which regularly attract attention far beyond the city. The Stuttgart State Orchestra, one of the most traditional orchestras in Germany, also contributes to the opera house's international reputation with its opera and concert performances. The Stuttgart State Opera thus combines historical architecture with artistic avant-garde - a lively cultural center that is deeply rooted in the city and at the same time has international appeal.
