Strolling through the streets of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee takes you on a journey through almost 800 years of cultural history. Since its founding in 1246, the city has developed into a lively center between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea—characterized by Renaissance architecture, southern flair, and a remarkable density of art and festivals. Here, great names from the past meet bold voices of the present; here, culture is not only preserved but lived. Personalities such as Gustav Mahler, Ingeborg Bachmann, and Giselbert Hoke are closely connected to the city. Their traces can be found in museums, on facades, in literary programs—and not least in the creative atmosphere that still characterizes Klagenfurt today.
The Gustav Mahler Composing Hut on the shores of Lake Wörthersee is a special place for music lovers. Here, where Mahler found inspiration during the summer months, selected concerts are still held today. The view across the water, the intimate atmosphere, and the proximity to nature make every event a unique experience—a cultural highlight in the open air that poetically combines music and landscape. Klagenfurt's museum landscape is also remarkably diverse:
Museums between history and the present
The cultural heart of the city beats in its museums and galleries. At the Museum of Modern Art Carinthia (MMKK), international contemporary art meets regional art history. Located in Klagenfurt Castle, contemporary installations are combined with Baroque frescoes—an exciting dialogue between the eras. The Klagenfurt City Gallery, on the other hand, is dedicated to international modernism and has already exhibited works by Andy Warhol, Egon Schiele, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The program is complemented by the Alpen-Adria-Galerie, where painting, design, and new media are presented in a contemporary setting.

The kärnten.museum, which presents the collections of the Carinthian State Museum in a new light, is a cultural and historical heavyweight. No less impressive is the Great Coat of Arms Hall in the Landhaus with its 665 artistically designed coats of arms—a Baroque Gesamtkunstwerk of extraordinary splendor. Literature lovers make a pilgrimage to the Robert Musil Literature Museum, housed in Robert Musil's birthplace. Here you can also encounter the work of Ingeborg Bachmann and Christine Lavant – a place of reflection and inspiration. Contemporary accents are also set by Galerie 3, the Kunstraum Lakeside in the Innovation Park near the university, and the Kunstraum Walker. They all show how lively and experimental the scene is.
Art in public spaces
Even outside traditional exhibition spaces, art can be found at every turn: frescoes by Giselbert Hoke in the main train station, a fountain by Kiki Kogelnik in the park of the Landhaus, and the chapel of the Stadtpfarrkirche designed by Ernst Fuchs transform the urban space itself into a gallery.

Festival city with Alpine-Adriatic flair
Klagenfurt knows how to celebrate culture in festival form. The Klagenfurt Festival combines theater, dance, music, and literature in unusual locations. In summer, the DonnerSzenen open Renaissance courtyards for open-air performances. Urban Echo fills Kardinalplatz with urban vibes, whileKlassik im Burghofpresents international stars in a historic setting. The Days of German-Language Literature, during which the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize is awarded annually, are internationally renowned – a major literary event with an impact far beyond Austria. When jugglers, musicians, and artists enchant the city center during Altstadtzauber (Old Town Magic) or when cuisines from Italy, Slovenia, and Carinthia come together during the Tage der Alpen-Adria Küche (Alpine-Adriatic Cuisine Days ), the special location in the Alpine-Adriatic region can be experienced with all the senses.

Those who come here discover more than just museums and festivals. They discover a city that knows its history, reflects on its present, and creatively shapes its future—open, diverse, and full of joie de vivre.
