As part of the Vienna Climate Biennale 2026, KunstHausWien is presenting the exhibition Seeds. Reclaiming Roots, Sowing Futures, transforming the museum into a poetic space for reflection on nature, history, and the future. Under the theme Unspeakable Worlds, the Biennale explores the multifaceted effects of the climate crisis and brings art, science, and society into dialogue about possible paths to a livable future.
Seeds form the basis of all life. They represent biological diversity, food security, cultural memory, and the ability of nature and society to renew themselves. The exhibition views the seed as a symbol of both origin and future. For the fourteen international artists, seeds become a starting point for ecological, cultural-historical, and political reflections. Their works combine global perspectives on migration, colonial history, and indigenous knowledge systems with questions of biodiversity, agriculture, and food sovereignty.

The exhibition shows how closely nature and society are intertwined. Topics such as resistance, self-empowerment, and practices of solidarity are central. Especially in times of global ecological crises, seeds become carriers of hope and resilience. They embody the idea that the future always arises from the preservation of knowledge, traditions, and ecological contexts. The works on display—including sculptures, photographs, video works, and installations—tell stories of loss and regeneration. They reflect the tension between destruction and new beginnings and show that caring for nature and society are inextricably linked. Just as a seed carries stories, memories, and possibilities within it, the exhibition unfolds a multi-layered network of narratives about global climate contexts. The exhibition is curated by Sophie Haslinger. On display are works by international artists such as Ackroyd & Harvey, Maria Thereza Alves, Kapwani Kiwanga, Jumana Manna, and others who bring different cultural and geographical perspectives on nature and society to the table.
