Art and culture beyond the hype, a relaxed stroll, no long queues in front of iconic paintings, just go, experience and enjoy the beautiful things. Not elitist, but grounded. Strolling through museums where you can breathe deeply and clear your head, inspired and filled with new impressions and knowledge. Meeting artists on the street, seeing their works all over the walls or listening to their music in the cafés.
Great philharmonic orchestras and insider tips, UNESCO World Heritage to touch, old fortress walls and modern architecture, tradition and modern energy, influences from all over the world and at the same time a cultural self-awareness: That is culture in Luxembourg. Museum fans get their money's worth in Luxembourg. There are around 60 of these cultural institutions in the country. Here are the museums on the Museum Mile:

VILLA VAUBAN - ART MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF LUXEMBOURG
The bourgeois villa from 1873, which was extended by a new building, is located in the middle of a historic park. The collection includes European painting and sculpture from the 17th to 19th centuries (Netherlands, France, Italy) as well as Luxembourg art from the 19th to 21st centuries. Permanent and special exhibitions as well as a varied accompanying program await visitors.
With over 100 paintings and 14 sculptures, the permanent exhibition in the Villa Vauban takes visitors on a tour through three centuries of artistic creation: from the Netherlands of the 17th century to the places of longing in Italy and French painting around the middle of the 19th century. In addition to styles, art eras and numerous masterpieces, there are small formats and miniatures to discover, as well as the spectacular acquisitions of Jean-Pierre Pescatore, donor and benefactor of the City of Luxembourg, on the occasion of the auction of the collection of King Willem II of the Netherlands in 1850.

CASINO LUXEMBOURG - ART CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY ART
As a center for contemporary art, Casino Luxembourg is dedicated exclusively to contemporary creation and focuses on artistic production rather than the collection of artworks. Over the years, however, certain works have crept into and around the building, some of them almost unnoticed. Some have since disappeared under several coats of paint or fallen victim to various redesigns. Others were obviously luckier and have remained, including A Wise Thought in a Circle by Nedko Solakov and La Surface de l'Art by Jacques Charlier. Still others were specially commissioned to be shown, such as Zeitgeist: Karl Cobain by Claudia Passeri, Beautiful Steps #10 by Lang/Baumann or Zäit Wuert by the artist collective LAb[au]. They are all now part of Casino Luxembourg's permanent "collection".

LËTZEBUERG CITY MUSEUM
The museum is housed in an ensemble of listed buildings. The permanent exhibition "The Luxembourg Story" tells the story of the city using original objects, topographical models, multimedia stations and an app. Temporary exhibitions are regularly held on the upper floors.
On the three lower levels of the museum and in a room dedicated to current urban planning (2,200 m2 in total), the exhibition tells the eventful history of Luxembourg City, from its beginnings in the 10th century to the present day. By following the historical chronology of the city's development, divided into four periods and 17 themes, the show highlights the most important and striking aspects of each era. The exhibition offers both local and foreign audiences a compact introduction to the city's history, with an appropriate selection of objects, films and audio documents, photos and multimedia applications. The "Future Perspectives" area, close to the museum reception, is dedicated to the organization of urban space: a large 3D model on a scale of 1:2,500 and an interactive media table allow visitors to familiarize themselves with current and future issues of urbanism.
In addition to over 500 original objects, The Luxembourg Story features several interactive stations where information can be explored in greater depth. Multimedia animations of the 1:666 scale models, which show the city at key historical moments, enrich the tour.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY - 'NATUR MUSÉE'
The National Museum of Natural History is the perfect place for anyone who wants to learn more about the earth and nature. In ten rooms you will find yourself in different worlds. The earth and the creative power of our planet, the history of life: each theme takes you on a journey through the rich and varied natural world.
The permanent exhibitions reflect the current state of natural history research in general and the museum's collections in particular and offer a global perspective on current topics such as evolution and biodiversity. The new design makes it possible to better present the diversity of the collections and encourages a new view of nature, its history and its exploration.
The mission of the "natur musée" is to raise environmental awareness and contribute to the preservation of the natural heritage. The exhibitions serve as a direct interface between the public and those involved in scientific production at the museum, with the division of themes following the scientific disciplines very freely.
The collections of the National Museum of Natural History reflect more than 160 years of the Institute's history and, above all, the dynamism and commitment of its curators and staff. The development of the collections can be reconstructed by comparing the various inventories drawn up more than 160 years ago with the current content of the collections. The following attributes characterize the current collection: regional, scientific, cultural, educational, aesthetic and historical.

MUSÉE DRÄI EECHELEN - FORTRESS, HISTORY, IDENTITIES
The Musée Dräi Eechelen is located in the redoubt of Fort Thüngen, built in 1732. You can discover its exceptionally well-preserved casemates. The terrace offers one of the most beautiful views of Luxembourg City. The history of Luxembourg and its fortress from the late Middle Ages to its dismantling in 1867 is the subject of the permanent exhibition. A special exhibition from October shows the expansion of the fortress under the Habsburgs.
The tour begins in the Middle Ages with the capture of Luxembourg City by the Burgundians in 1443 and ends with the construction of the Adolf Bridge in 1903. Over 600 objects and original documents, many of which have never been on display before, underline the diversity of the collections. A special room houses a selection of historical photographs documenting the fortress immediately before and during the razing. The historic museum building is itself an important element of the permanent exhibition. With its impressive underground galleries and mines, it still corresponds to a large extent to the original state of the last expansion phase of 1836/37. In the multimedia room, central themes of the permanent exhibition can be explored in greater depth using virtual animations and audiovisual documentation. Audio guides with detailed explanations of a large number of objects are available free of charge in German, French, English and Luxembourgish. Films are shown and conferences related to the museum's themes are held in the auditorium.

MUDAM LUXEMBOURG - THE CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM IN LUXEMBOURG

Mudam Luxembourg opened in 2006 in a building specially designed by the renowned Chinese-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei in the Dräi Eechelen park. With its collection, its exhibitions, its program and its partnerships, Mudam pursues the goal of collecting and presenting the most important art of our time and making it accessible to the widest possible audience.
Consistently international in both content and concept, the Mudam collection comprises almost 700 works in all media by artists from Luxembourg and around the world. A small part of the collection consists of fashion and design objects. More than 54 works in the collection were commissioned for the Mudam and were created in consideration of its specific architectural conditions. The key dates for the development of the collection were the first acquisitions in the 1990s, the founding of the museum in 1998 and its opening in 2006. Although the 1960s are regarded as a historical reference point for contemporary art, the majority of the works in the collection date from 1989 to the present day. One exception is the furniture ensemble for the Paimio Sanatorium, which was designed by the architect Alvar Aalto between 1931 and 1933 and acquired by Mudam in 2002.
