The Tyrolean Africa expert and photographer Gert Chesi has collected more than 1,000 exhibits on his travels to Asia and Africa and is showing them in the Museum der Völker in Schwaz.

The African collection focuses on cult objects from animist religions, ranging from the oldest burial finds of the Nok and Katsina cultures to the ritual objects of the Ogboni League and modern voodoo movements. The Asian collection is dominated by finds from Burma (Myanmar), Thailand and China, which contrast attractively with the figures and masks from Africa. Significant depictions of Buddha, Chinese excavations from the Han and Tang periods.

Based on the Far Eastern teachings of Siddharta Gautama, the exhibition "Between Heaven and Earth" on the ground floor invites visitors to explore spirituality, religion, philosophy, secular ethics and the ever-present questions of being human: What is a good life? What do I stand up for? What does community mean to me? The exhibition was created together with students from the Faculty of Architecture, Studio 2, at the University of Innsbruck under the direction of Eric Sidoroff.
Collaboration with European museums and private collectors has made a wide variety of treasures possible. Lectures and concerts round off the exhibition and invite visitors on a journey around the world through different cultures. In addition to the main exhibition, two rooms are available for special exhibitions. There you can marvel at temporary ethnographic collections and modern non-European art.
