The musical My Fair Lady was already a huge success when it premiered on Broadway in 1956. At that time played by Julie Andrews, Audrey Hepburn took on the role of the first coarse, then graceful Eliza in the film version (1964). For the German premiere in Berlin in 1961, pop lyricist and librettist Robert Gilbert created a translation in which dialect and language exercises were cleverly translated into German. As a result, "Es grünt so grün" and "Ich hätt' getanzt heut' Nacht" are still among the most popular musical earworms today.
It's not just clothes that make the man, clean speech is also part of a well-groomed appearance. Renowned phonetics professor Henry Higgins is convinced of this and therefore accepts an ambitious wager: Spurred on by his friend Colonel Pickering, Higgins attempts to turn a simple flower seller into a refined lady within six months by means of language training. The subject of the experiment is the young Eliza Doolittle, who had caught Higgins' eye on the street with her remarkably vulgar dialect. The arrogant professor begins to mold Eliza in his strict lessons and teach her the rules of upper-class conversation. But a faux pas at the prestigious Ascot horse race jeopardizes the success of his plan. In the end, the bachelor has to admit that Eliza has become more than just an experiment ...
