In October 2025, the MusikTheater an der Wien celebrates Johann Strauss' 200th birthday with a festive new production of "Die Fledermaus" - directed by artistic director Stefan Herheim. A musical event that revives the Viennese operetta tradition.

On April 5, 1874, the curtain rose on what is now the Linke Wienzeile for a world premiere that would change the genre of operetta, the life of composer Johann Strauss and thus the history of the Theater an der Wien forever. For Die Fledermaus broke all boundaries with relish: The differences between boulevard theater and grand opera, between U and E, appearance and reality, festive ball and pious prison, nobility and servants were washed away by champagne. Despite its worldwide triumph, Die Fledermaus has remained a work that belongs to Vienna like no other. It has been put on the repertoire for a wide variety of occasions, because the blissful waltz is also able to disguise many a skeleton in the closet ...

To mark the 200th anniversary of Johann Strauss' birth, the MusikTheater an der Wien is celebrating the "Queen of all operettas" with a new production. And as with the world premiere, the artistic direction is also involved this time: While the director Marie Geistinger excelled in the leading role of Rosalinde a good 150 years ago, host Stefan Herheim is now personally responsible for the direction.
Premiere October 4
