The Moderne Galerie Saarbrücken combines modern art with modern architecture - a place where art from the 19th century to the present day comes alive and can be experienced.
The Moderne Galerie is picturesquely situated on the Saaruferpromenade opposite the Saarländisches Staatstheater and is considered one of the most important galleries for art from the mid-19th century to the present day. The collection ranges from the Berlin Secession to Expressionism and Art Informel and includes outstanding works from the École de Paris as well as the graphic art collection with around 18,000 sheets. A special treasure is the estate of the avant-garde sculptor Alexander Archipenko as well as an extensive photographic collection with works by Otto Steinert's students.
Since its extension was completed in 2017, the gallery has taken on a new look: a light-flooded pavilion that combines art and architecture into a tangible form. In the adjoining sculpture garden, contemporary art invites visitors to linger and engage in dialog.
In regularly changing exhibitions - from historical retrospectives to experimental positions - themes such as identity, memory and overcoming boundaries are explored. Educational programs such as workshops, artist talks and participatory formats make the Moderne Galerie a lively forum for art, reflection and encounters.
