A fairy tale about friendship, courage and the power of the heart: with The Snow Queen, the Schleswig-Holsteinisches Landestheater brings Hans Christian Andersen's timeless classic to the stage as an opera for the whole family.

Kay and Gerda are inseparable friends. One day, however, a splinter gets into Kay's eye. This splinter is broken from a magic mirror, through which one can only perceive the bad things in the world. No longer capable of joy and compassion, Kay goes to the icy realm of the Snow Queen. His girlfriend Gerda, who refuses to accept that she has lost him, sets off in search of him. On her adventurous journey, she encounters story-telling flowers, wild robbers, talking reindeer, sneaky trolls and many other fairy-tale characters.

To mark the 150th anniversary of the death of the great Danish fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen, one of his stories will be performed as an opera on the Landestheater stages for the first time. Marius Felix Lange, the composer of the work, which premiered in 2016, has established himself as one of the most prominent creators of contemporary children's and family operas in recent years.
Premiere December 6, 2025
Further performances: December 14, 21 and 27, 2025, January 15, 20 and 25, February 15, March 14, 2026
