The Staatstheater Augsburg brings Otto Nicolai's popular Shakespeare opera to the stage with plenty of wit, charm and a fine sense of interpersonal confusion. German romanticism and Italian esprit meet in this musical comedy full of wordplay, mistaken identities and romantic turbulence - an entertaining evening of opera with depth.
Mrs. Fluth and Mrs. Reich, two married ladies, receive love letters from the charming Hallodri Falstaff at the same time. They decide to teach him a lesson and their husbands as well. At the same time, Anna, Mrs. Reich's daughter, has to fend off three suitors at once. German romance meets Italian charm. The comedic material by William Shakespeare unfolds in Nicolai's "comic-fantastic" opera into an equally humorous and touching comedy about gender roles and the longing for love.
