The Staatstheater Cottbus is the only state theater in the state of Brandenburg and an important cultural center in the region. It combines musical theater, drama, ballet and concerts under one roof and offers a diverse repertoire for a wide audience.
The theater was built between 1906 and 1908 according to plans by Berlin architect Bernhard Sehring, who had already made a name for himself with the Theater des Westens in Berlin. The building is an outstanding example of late secessionist Art Nouveau and combines architecture, arts and crafts, painting and sculpture to create a total work of art. The theater opened on October 1, 1908 with Lessing's "Minna von Barnhelm".
