Three composers whose works transcend boundaries - be it between genres, cultures or personal identities - come together in the Nikolaisaal Potsdam. The concert pays tribute to Florence Price, a pioneering African-American composer, highlights George Gershwin's ingenious combination of classical music and jazz and presents Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's "Reformation Symphony", a work that is deeply rooted in its creator's spiritual exploration.
She was regarded as a musical prodigy, but her career in early 20th century America was hampered by two "handicaps": being a woman and being black. Florence Price can be considered a true pioneer of American music history, composing around 300 works and drawing on a variety of stylistic influences. Her compatriot George Gershwin, whose path to fame was comparatively a walk in the park, also overcame the boundaries of classical music and jazz in a groundbreaking way. Mendelssohn's 5th Symphony is a pioneering work of a completely different kind, an unprecedented musical confession of faith by a Jew baptized as a Christian.
