Revenge, madness and morbidity - "Sweeney Todd" takes us down into the dark alleyways of London, where a barber with a sharp blade and a pastry chef form a macabre alliance.
After 15 years, barber Benjamin Barker returns to London - now under the name "Sweeney Todd". Back then, his family and livelihood were taken from him by a corrupt judge. Driven by pain and a desire for revenge, he embarks on a bloody campaign of vengeance. Together with Mrs. Lovett, whose pie store is on the brink of ruin, he opens a barbershop - and uses his customers as deadly ingredients in Lovett's meat pies.
The production weaves dark passion, horror and black humor into a musical thriller: between tonal intensity, dramatic twists and grotesque comedy, a picture of human despair, desperation and destructive rage emerges. The characters - from the obsessed barber to the unscrupulous master baker - are deeply broken and drive the plot into a spiral of guilt, hatred and retribution.
"Sweeney Todd" requires the audience to empathize and ask questions: Where does revenge end and betrayal of oneself begin? How close are justice and madness, just like life and death? The intensity of this play is its appeal: it does not shy away, it shows darkness - and yet there is still room for questions, compassion and reflection.
