Sweeter than Honey. A Panorama of Written Art is dedicated to writing as an artistic medium and traces its development from the 20th century to the present day. The exhibition will be on display at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich from December 11, 2025, to April 12, 2026.

On approximately 1,200 square meters of exhibition space , more than 60 artistic positions over 100 works that allow visitors to experience the interplay of writing and images in all its facets. The show offers a comprehensive overview of so-called written art —from handwriting, calligraphy, and typography to conceptual art and informal approaches.

Writing as image, language as art

The works on display illustrate the cultural and temporal continuity of written art. Artists invent their own alphabets, compose poems, quote literary or political texts, and translate thoughts into spray-painted, graphic, or embroidered messages. Writing thus becomes not only a vehicle for meaning, but also an image and an artistic form in its own right.

Sweeter than Honey is the most comprehensive presentation of the Written Art Collection to date. most comprehensive presentation of the Written Art Collection and also marks the culmination of ten years of cooperation with the Pinakothek der Moderne. The exhibition is aimed at anyone interested in contemporary art, calligraphy, and the connection between language and image.
