The Theater Freiburg is the oldest and largest theater in Freiburg im Breisgau. It is located on the edge of Freiburg's old town on the corner of Bertoldstraße and Platz der Alten Synagoge. The building combines four venues under one roof: the main theater, the small theater, the chamber stage and the Werkraum. Author readings, lecture evenings and chamber concerts also take place in the Winterer Foyer.
Theater Freiburg is home to the musical theater, drama, concert, dance and young theater sections. With around 370 employees, in-house productions, co-productions and guest performances are developed and staged on four stages. A diverse cultural offering is created around the stages every season. The theater has earned an international reputation as one of the leading multi-genre theaters in the German-speaking world. Since 2017, Peter Carp has led the theater as artistic director and positioned it as a "world receiver" - with a focus on international, often still unknown directing talents.

From the 2025/2026 season, theater and opera director Felix Rothenhäusler will take over as artistic director. He wants his repertoire to appeal to all sections of the city's society and plans to network closely with Freiburg's diverse cultural scene. Theater Freiburg is also committed to accessibility and inclusion. The Grosses Haus, the Kleines Haus and the Werkraum are barrier-free, there are designated wheelchair spaces and special offers such as "Relaxed Performances" in a relaxed atmosphere - especially for people with special needs.
Theater Freiburg is a lively place for encounters and cultural exchange. With its diverse program and clear commitment to openness, diversity and participation, it plays a key role in shaping the cultural life of the city.
