The work of Chinese-Canadian artist Matthew Wong (1984-2019) is dynamic, colorful and expressive. Of the many artists who inspired him, Vincent van Gogh was the most significant. This exhibition invites you to learn more about Wong's work and his artistic connection to Van Gogh.

Matthew Wong began drawing and painting in 2011, at the age of 27. Within a few years, he developed a very personal style, painting imaginative landscapes with intense colors. Van Gogh was a great source of inspiration for Wong. His influence is unmistakable in terms of the use of color, the thick brushstrokes and the personal themes in Wong's work. This exhibition takes a closer look at the artistic and personal connection between the two artists. Wong saw his own life reflected in Van Gogh's and once said:

'I see myself in him. The impossibility of belonging in this world.

Last refuge
Van Gogh and Wong were both searching for their vocation for a long time, which eventually turned out to be painting. Wong even considered it his "last resort". Both artists struggled with their mental health, which led to a tragic, early death. Although there are many similarities, both created a very individual body of work that is highly personal and emotionally charged.
Unlike Van Gogh, Wong's talent was more widely recognized during his short and tumultuous career. Barely five years after his first work, a prestigious museum acquired a painting by Wong, and many renowned collectors followed suit.
