Jitka Hanzlová fled from the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic to West Germany in 1982, where she studied photography in Essen. Her biography shapes the central themes of her work: Exile, memory and identity.
The ALBERTINA exhibition shows ten of her most important series: Rokytnik (1990-1994) is dedicated to the artist's home village of the same name, Forest (2000-2005) to the forest of her childhood. Later series of portraits in an urban environment, such as Residents (1994-1996) and Female (1997-2000), explore the relationship between the individual and their surroundings.
Hanzlová, born in 1958, is one of the most internationally renowned contemporary photographers. She received the European Photography Award in 1995 and the Paris Photo Prize for Contemporary Photography in 2007. The ALBERTINA Museum is presenting Hanzlová's first solo museum exhibition in Austria.
