In the heart of the World Heritage city of Regensburg, the Historical Museum invites you to discover over 100,000 years of cultural and urban history. Housed in the venerable former Minorite monastery on Dachauplatz, the history of the region unfolds in an impressive permanent exhibition - from the Stone Age to the 19th century.
Right at the beginning, visitors can expect a fascinating insight into early human history: In the prehistory section, the museum tells of the development of the region since the Palaeolithic Age under the title "The Prehistoric Upper Palatinate". With important archaeological finds - including the 250,000-year-old hand axe from Pösing - the exhibition traces the path to the end of the Celtic culture in the 1st century BC. Particularly moving: the grave of the so-called "first Regensburger" from the Neolithic period. A highlight is the Roman section, which brings ancient Regensburg to life as "Castra Regina". Coin treasures, everyday objects, impressive inscriptions and detailed models illustrate the importance the city once had as a military outpost of the Roman Empire. The newly designed presentation from 2003 combines well-founded historical information with modern design - an experience for all age groups. Finally, Regensburg's medieval heart beats in the former nave of the Minorite Church. Between the cloisters, sacred sculptures and atmospherically staged exhibits, visitors encounter the city's heyday: as a trading center, imperial seat and artistic metropolis. The exhibition ranges from political and economic structures to everyday life and religious art of the 15th and 16th centuries. The Historisches Museum Regensburg is more than just an exhibition - it is a living time machine that makes history tangible to the senses.

Special exhibition: GrenzWerte - The Roman World Heritage in Bavaria
Exhibition at the Historical Museum and the World Heritage Visitor Center
The exhibition provides comprehensive insights into the Roman heritage in Germany, Bavaria and Regensburg. It presents aspects of Roman life, illustrated with dioramas, Roman armor and garments and archaeological finds that have never been shown before.
The exhibition takes place in two locations: the Historical Museum and the UNESCO World Heritage Regensburg Visitor Center at the Stone Bridge. Both locations are only a few minutes' walk from each other.
The exhibition is based on a presentation by the Limes coordinators of the Upper German-Raetian Limes and the German Limes Commission. The occasion is the inscription of the Upper German-Raetian Limes as a UNESCO World Heritage Site 20 years ago. For Regensburg, it was expanded in cooperation with the Coordination of Archaeological World Heritage Sites of the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments. In addition, the second Roman World Heritage Site in Bavaria, the Danube Limes, is also featured. A special focus is placed on its Bavarian section and the sites in Regensburg.
