The Salzburg State Theater is one of the lively cultural landmarks of Mozart's city. Located directly on Mirabell Gardens, the neo-baroque building from 1892/93 dominates the cityscape of Salzburg's old town on the right bank and is one of the most important historical venues in the state.

Theater was already being performed at this location in the 18th century: in 1775, a court theater was built on the remains of the former ballroom, where Mozart and his contemporaries regularly performed and helped establish one of his earliest opera successes with Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Ab duction from the Seraglio).

The current building was inaugurated with Mozart's La clemenza di Tito and quickly became one of Austria's central performing arts venues. Viennese architects Fellner & Helmer created a space that is equally suited to musical theater, drama, and ballet.

With around 25 new productions per season and approximately 400 performances between September and June, the theater presents a diverse program of classical repertoire, contemporary plays, and innovative formats. Its own ensembles for opera, drama, ballet, and the young division Junges Land make it a vibrant center for the performing arts.  Even outside the season, the Landestheater plays a role in Salzburg's cultural life: during the summer months, the building and its stage are occasionally used for productions of the Salzburg Festival, ensuring that it remains both locally rooted and internationally connected.

A visit to the Salzburg State Theater combines architectural history, lively performing arts, and the rich tradition of a city where music and theater have been closely intertwined for centuries.
