Mozart's Idomeneo tells the story of a king who returns home from war and is threatened with ruin by a fateful oath. The production at the Tyrolean State Theater focuses on the inner conflicts between duty, guilt, and human responsibility.
After ten years of war and wandering, the Cretan king Idomeneo finally returns home—but the price for his rescue from the raging sea was an oath that brings him to the brink of despair: he promised the sea god Neptune the life of the first person he would meet upon his arrival. He soon realizes how cruel fate can be: that person is his own son, Idamante.
Mozart's Idomeneo unfolds the great psychological depth that distinguishes his work from many of his early operas around this dramatic core. Although formally rooted in the tradition of dramma per musica, its expressive music transcends the narrow boundaries of the genre and opens up spaces for dramatic thinking that already recalls later masterpieces.
The Tyrolean production explores the possibilities of reconciling personal ties and civic duties, placing particular emphasis on the inner conflicts of the characters and the vocal and choral potential of the ensemble. Idomeneo struggles to find a way out that will save his son's life without destroying the common good — a dilemma that soon leads to illness and unrest among the people and transforms the limits of individual decisions into a social echo.
Against the backdrop of traumatic experiences, between guilt and reconciliation, love and duty, Mozart's music unfolds as a mirror of human ambivalence. Conductor Gerrit Prießnitz leads the Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra through the dazzling score, in which powerful choruses and intimate arias go hand in hand. Under the direction of Henry Mason, who brings together elements of social politics, psychology, and spirituality, Idomeneo becomes a haunting experience that transfers ancient myths into today's social context.
