An opera house that combines history, architecture and musical excellence in a special way - in the middle of the magnificent boulevard Unter den Linden.
The Staatsoper is one of the oldest and most influential opera houses in Europe. Built between 1741 and 1743 on the orders of Frederick the Great, it was one of the very first free-standing opera houses - a deliberately representative building intended to express the proximity of court, city and art. Over the centuries, the neoclassical building by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff has survived fires, wartime destruction and political upheaval and has been rebuilt again and again, most recently in a comprehensive renovation until 2017, which significantly modernized the acoustics and furnishings without losing its historical character.
Today, the Staatsoper shapes the cultural center of Berlin with major opera productions, an international ensemble and the traditional Staatskapelle Berlin. The auditorium combines historical elegance with technical modernity, while the stage space has the size to support monumental works as well as concentrated directorial concepts.
The location itself plays an important role: the route along the boulevard Unter den Linden, past the university, museums and baroque architecture, leads directly to a house that has become part of Berlin's identity over the centuries. Anyone who attends a performance will sense this connection - an interplay of urban history, musical tradition and contemporary opera experience that only exists here in this form.
