A "Magic Flute" for today: this version retells Mozart's opera with wit, lightness and lots of music - cheeky, touching and close to the longings of a present that urgently needs comfort and fantasy.

Music and love can heal the world. This is the message of the immortal "Magic Flute". A small variety theater troupe now has the audacious plan to bring this masterpiece to the stage: with little money and personnel, but with a lot of imagination, wit and musicality. The ensemble liberates the somewhat dusty opera characters from false pathos in an anarchic and cheeky way - and we meet people with modern-day longings and needs: the good-natured, maudlin Prince Tamino and his impulse-driven bird-catcher friend Papageno. The passionately loving and at the same time emotionally confused Pamina. The manly, vain Prince Sarastro and the heartbroken Queen of the Night, who fight their power struggles on the backs of the younger generation. These inwardly lonely characters, driven by longing, are searching for forces of good in a mysteriously threatening outside world. Carried by heart-wrenching music, they master the balancing act between comedy and tragedy with ease.

The play, which premiered at Vienna's Burgtheater in 2024, manages to infuse Mozart's famous opera with wit, esprit, and contemporary relevance—while preserving its magic. The classical melodies have been rearranged and enter into a surprising dialogue with pop classics of our time. Mozart and Schikaneder would have turned over in their graves with delight.
