The Royal Museum of Fine Arts is an art museum in Antwerp. The current monumental building on the Leopold De Waelplaats was built between 1884 and 1890 to designs by Jan Jacob Winders and Frans Van Dijk and was opened on August 11, 1890. The collection of 7600 paintings[1] shows the artistic developments in Antwerp, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries, when the Scheldt city was one of the most important art centers in Europe.

On the upper floor, works by the so-called "Vlaamse Primitieven", Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, Dirk Bouts and Hans Memling are on display. Quentin Massys, Joachim Patenier, Frans Floris and Marten de Vos as representatives of the Renaissance and Baroque painters such as Peter Paul Rubens, Anthonis van Dyck and Jacob Jordaens are also on display. Belgian painting of the 19th century is represented by Nicaise de Keyser and Hendrik Leys, Henri de Braekeleer and James Ensor. Non-Belgian masterpieces are represented by Jean Fouquet, Simone Martini, Frans Hals and Antonello da Messina with his Crucifixion.

The first floor is dedicated to 20th century art with works by Rik Wouters, Constant Permeke and René Magritte.
