The Latvian Cultural Center's traveling exhibition presents 14 traditional costumes that reflect the diversity of Latvian culture in terms of time, region and culture. Some of them also tell exciting stories of how they were created and worn, which are closely linked to Latvia's eventful history.
Folk costume is one of Latvia's most important cultural treasures. As a living heritage, it combines traditional craftsmanship that has grown over centuries and been passed down from generation to generation. Today, folk costume is also an important and striking symbol of Latvian identity. The Latvian tradition of the song and dance festival, which is part of the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage and brings together more than 40,000 participants in Riga, also plays a special role here.
Visually, the folk costumes differ considerably depending on the region. The canon of Latvian folk costume goes back to the local traditions of Latvia's five cultural and historical regions (in Latvian: Vidzeme, Kurzeme, Latgale, Zemgale, Sēlija) and is based on examples from museum collections.
