Modernism in the mirror of dark emotions: The Saarland Museum shows masterpieces from Munch to van Gogh and brings fear, sadness and despair to life in impressive graphic art.
Fear, despair, jealousy, sadness, anger, horror: dark feelings are part of being human - and yet they often remain hidden. It is these emotions that have always been a driving force behind artistic creation and find expression in numerous important works of art, particularly in the graphic art of classical modernism. Based on the museum's own holdings and supplemented by top-class loans, the presentation sheds light on this theme with around 110 works. On display are key works by Otto Dix, James Ensor, Vincent van Gogh, Käthe Kollwitz, Alfred Kubin, Edvard Munch and many others. Particularly noteworthy is the Munch collection, which is being presented in its entirety for the first time.
