The 5th symphony concert of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden combines great soundscapes and emotional depths - an evening that expands horizons and inspires listeners anew with compositions by master composers.
When Herbert Blomstedt stands on the podium, music becomes a way of life. The 98-year-old honorary conductor of the Sächsische Staatskapelle embodies a humility and clarity that are deeply rooted in his art. His interpretations of Bruckner have long been regarded as a reference. They are free of pathos and imbued with intellectual rigor, tonal transparency and inner calm. Bruckner's will to form culminates in the Fifth, presented in 1876 and described by the composer himself as his "most daring symphony in terms of counterpoint". It makes the highest demands on musicians and listeners alike and yet reveals itself with simple grandeur: in the finale, a grandiose fugato rises up as an apotheosis of sound devoid of any vanity.
