Once again, Agatha Christie has pulled off the magic trick. Once again we are led around by the nose. Once again, it is pure pleasure to watch this spectacle...

Everything speaks against the sales representative Leonard Vole. He is accused of murdering the widow Emily French. His motive seems clear: the elderly lady had left him her entire fortune. Defense lawyer Sir Wilfried Robarts takes on the case and does not do badly. He manages to cast doubt on the testimony of the first two witnesses through skillful questioning. But the third and final witness surprises everyone present: It is Romaine Heilger - the defendant's wife. She refutes his alleged alibi. The noose around Leonard's neck gets tighter and tighter. On the evening before the verdict is announced, a strange woman with a disfigured face contacts Sir Wilfrid and presents new evidence at the last minute ...

After the great success of the short story with the same title, director Peter Saunders persuaded Agatha Christie to adapt the text for the theater. In 1957, the story was made into a film starring Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton.
