When the first snow covers the Kaiser Mountains and the Inn Valley, Kufsteinerland is transformed into a quiet, glowing winter wonderland. Between old town walls, snow-covered forests and warmly lit alleyways, the Advent season here is one of the most intimate and atmospheric times of the year. It is not only the landscape that contributes to this, but above all a series of lovingly cultivated traditions: The Advent weekends at the historic fortress, the cozy Christmas market in the town park and the lively village nativity scene in the spa town of Bad Häring are the highlights of a region that authentically lives its winter culture.

Christmas magic at Kufstein Fortress
The path often leads across the historic town square, past colorful facades and small stores, up to Kufstein Fortress, a landmark high above the town. With the panoramic lift, you glide almost silently out of everyday life and enter a place that tells the story of centuries. Behind thick walls, in the vaults of the casemates and in the open courtyards, a Christmas experience unfolds that evokes the magic of times gone by. The scent of cinnamon, roasted nuts and spicy mulled wine wafts through the air. Craftspeople show how to create personal souvenirs from wood, felt or silver. For children, there is a bakery, craft workshop and the Engerl post office - small doors into big fantasy worlds.

Christmas market in Kufstein town park
Down in Kufstein's town park, a different kind of magic opens up: a place of encounter, of arrival. Lantern light falls on snow-covered paths, and from the stalls emanate those scents that bring memories back to the present - fresh kiachl, sweet punch, warm doughnuts. Families stand together, one hand on a cup, the other in a glove. The live music is quiet enough not to drown out the voices, but warm enough to carry the hearts. Children take a spin on the carousel and their joy mingles with the sound of Advent carols as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
November 21 to December 21, 2025, Wednesday to Sunday, free admission

Night watchman tour - a special kind of city tour
When dusk falls over the fortress town and the alleyways slowly come to rest, the night watchman's hour begins. With flickering lantern, waving cloak and halberd, he leads his guests through the winding paths, past mighty walls, hidden courtyards and quiet squares.
He talks about his historical role: the guardian of the night, who once guaranteed safety, order and fire watch. Traditions, anecdotes and legends create a vivid picture of a time when darkness meant not only silence, but also danger.
The tour combines historical facts with atmospheric storytelling - humorous, touching and always close to the history of the town. Kufstein thus becomes a stage: the fortress towers above it like a silent witness to the centuries, old stones begin to speak and events long past come close again.
For locals and visitors alike, the night watchman tour is a rare opportunity to experience the town anew and with alert senses.
From November 17, 2025, regular dates

Thiersee Christmas market
The Christmas market in Thiersee is located directly on the tranquil Wintersee lake and only takes place once during Advent - making it something very special. People meet around the campfire with hot drinks, children enjoy the petting zoo and horse-drawn sleigh rides, while the Bundesmusikkapelle band accompanies the Advent atmosphere with Christmas tunes. Handcrafted gift ideas and regional specialties invite you to choose with time and muse and give the gift of shared moments.

Nativity scene hike in Bad Häring
Bad Häring cultivates the Tyrolean tradition of "Nativity scene viewing" with particular devotion. By soft lantern light, the hike leads through the village, past lovingly preserved chapels and small cultural and historical treasures.
The village nativity scene shows scenes of the Holy Night with figures that are carefully maintained and rearranged year after year. The mining nativity scene tells the regional story, in which life underground, faith and community were closely interwoven. In the Hildegard von Bingen Chapel, visitors can expect an elaborately designed oriental nativity scene - with fine fabrics, warm colors and detailed figures. The Antonius Chapel, on the other hand, houses a traditional box nativity scene, whose miniature scenery opens up a world in miniature.
Finally, crib maker Walter Peer opens his workshop. Here you can see how much craftsmanship, patience and dedication goes into every figure, every ridge and every landscape. Visitors learn which materials are used, how heads and hands are carved and why every nativity scene is also a story of home, family and faith.
The crib walk combines local history, quiet contemplation and conscious encounters - and lets you feel why cribs in the Alpine region are still a precious cultural heritage today.

And when the "Klöpfler" are out and about in Ebbs, another tradition becomes visible: disguised figures, shepherds' songs, quiet knocking on doors - a tradition that warms the darkness. Historic doors open, such as those of the cutler's house built in 1536, where schnapps distiller Albert Schmid combines stories, customs and craftsmanship.

Advent in Kufsteinerland is not loud, not hasty. It is a pause for thought - a quiet glow between mountains and history.
