The acclaimed Biennale de l'Image en Mouvement returned to the Centre d'Art Contemporain Genève on January 23, 2024, for an opening in the presence of artists and curators.

The 18th edition of the Biennale, entitled "A Cosmic Movie Camera", will expand on the ever-evolving discourse on the moving image in all its forms, especially in the age of algorithms. "A cosmic movie camera" refers to the recent discovery by astrophysicists of the photon ring around a black hole, the "infinite light trap" that may be the key way for humanity to learn more about the persistent unknown: the interior of black holes. Each artist presents a wealth of visual clues to the unseen and unknown. They create holographic figures, television shows in the ruins of Butler, simulations that take on a life of their own, libraries of generative biological forms, AI courts, games of distributed ancient intelligence, tragic dramas of artificial beings, laboratories for future genetic exchange, hallucinated cloud cities, endless projections.
Each artist has been invited to produce an original work that will be premiered at the opening in Geneva. Lawrence Lek and Emmanuel Van der Auwera will also present an adapted version of their respective works at the city's train stations (Léman Express) as part of the Mire project in collaboration with the Fonds cantonal d'art contemporain Genève.
The opening of the Biennale de l'Image en Mouvement 2024 (BIM'24) marked the first event of an important year for the institution as it celebrates its 50th anniversary. To mark the event, the Centre d'Art Contemporain Genève is proposing an initiative around the idea of the "gift", commissioned as part of a bespoke furniture and architecture project created for BIM'24 by Peruvian designer Giacomo Castagnola.
Parallel to the physical exhibition of the Biennale de l'Image en Mouvement 2024 at the Centre d'Art Contemporain Genève, a 3D virtual-world-as-exhibition, presented by EPOCH, will exist online well beyond the end of the show on May 16. This virtual world not only translates the artists' works into a 3D space and re-contextualizes them - the Centre d'Art Contemporain Genève becomes imaginary in a speculative future - but also models the past, present and possible future of the city of Geneva.
