The monument shows a wandering merchant in the Münsterland region with his backpack, the so-called Kiepe. Typical for the Kiepenkerle was their outfit. Wearing a blue linen smock, red neckerchief, cap, knotted stick and pipe, they moved from farm to farm and from house to house with their pannier. In earlier times, they were responsible for the exchange of goods and news between town and country.
