A house that shows how design shapes our everyday lives - from historical objects to contemporary ideas.

The MAK on Vienna's Ringstrasse is one of those museums where you quickly realize how close art and use are. The collection ranges from furniture, glass and textiles to objects from the Wiener Werkstätte and modern design concepts that pose current questions about function, aesthetics and sustainability. The building itself - a clearly structured structure from the 19th century - creates the perfect setting for this mixture of tradition and the present.

Inside, spacious showrooms alternate with concentrated presentations that show how materials, shapes and ideas can shape entire lifestyles. The MAK Design Lab, in particular, takes a clear look at the present and the future: it deals with topics such as consumption, technology and social change - not abstractly, but vividly and close to everyday life. A visit to the MAK is therefore less a tour through eras and more a look at how our understanding of design is changing - and why good design is always a question to the world we live in.
