A concert hall that rethinks the proximity between music and audience - architecturally striking, with an extraordinary sound and located in the middle of Berlin's cultural axis.

The Pierre Boulez Saal was opened in 2017 and designed by Frank Gehry, whose signature style is visible here in an unusually restrained but precise manner: The elliptical shape of the hall, the warm wood and the open room design create an atmosphere in which the separation between stage and audience is almost completely eliminated. The sound unfolds evenly in all directions - a concept developed by acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota, resulting in the immediate presence for which the hall is internationally renowned.

The special feature is apparent as soon as you enter: The room feels both intimate and spacious at the same time, as the rows of seats wrap around the center like a flowing body. Concerts take place right in the middle - artists and audience share the same space, without distance, but with great clarity of sound. This makes the hall ideal for chamber music, solo programs and contemporary formats, which often unfold a completely new effect here.

The Boulez Saal also sets its own accent in terms of programming. It is home to the Barenboim-Said Academy, which brings together musicians from all over the world, and presents classical concerts as well as new music, jazz evenings and interdisciplinary projects. Its location between Unter den Linden, Museum Island and Humboldt University adds the cultural context that makes a visit an urban experience.

The Pierre Boulez Saal is therefore not a traditional concert hall, but a place that consciously promotes proximity, openness and a contemporary concert culture - a space that shows how architecture and sound can think together.
