With Tyll, Daniel Kehlmann dedicated an entire novel to the medieval jester character Till Eulenspiegel. For the Swiss premiere, director Corinna von Rad, musician Jürg Kienberger and their team took on this material. They approach Tyll's world, which is marked by death and horror, with a spotlight and lots of music. But Tyll and his stories survive.
The world in Tyll is falling apart at the seams. The Thirty Years' War has broken out, Europe is ravaged by plagues, violence and religious fanaticism. Tyll Ulenspiegel, a miller's son, virtuoso tightrope walker and demonic rogue, wanders through this apocalyptic hidden world. More than once he jumps off the brink of death. Tyll has decided not to die and to continue telling his stories forever. And because stories drive world events and bring the past back to life again and again, the eternally telling Tyll also becomes an undead figure.
In their adaptation of the novel, director Corinna von Rad, musician Jürg Kienberger and the actors dedicate themselves to this wondrous story, which shows that Laughter and storytelling outlast any collapsed order.
