The Museum of Cultural History forms the historical core of the Osnabrück Museum Quarter. It dates back to the founding of the Osnabrück Museum and Art Association in 1879, for whose collections the historicist museum building was once erected. Opened in 1890, it was transferred to municipal ownership in 1929. Today, the Museum of Cultural History presents the diverse urban and cultural history collections of the Osnabrück Museum Quarter in its permanent and temporary exhibitions. The focus is on the permanent exhibition on the history of the city "Stadtspuren Osnabrück", the graphics collection with works by Albrecht Dürer and the Old Master paintings in the "Gustav Stüve Collection".
In addition, the Museum of Cultural History consciously sees itself as a "host": here we facilitate encounters and promote understanding for differences and similarities. We actively involve the citizens of Osnabrück and guests from all over the world in the exchange about the past and present - after all, it is their history. In this way, the Museum of Cultural History makes an important contribution to ensuring peaceful coexistence in the present and future.

The pictorial worlds of Albrecht Dürer
The work of Albrecht Dürer (1471 - 1528) catapulted the art world into a new era. Under the aspect of his 'modern', self-confident individuality, the universal genius created a rich world of images that continues to fascinate in philosophical and artistic terms to this day. Dr. Konrad Liebmann was also impressed by this oeuvre. In 1996, the Osnabrück antiquarian and collector's wish to permanently exhibit his collection of Albrecht Dürer's graphic works in Osnabrück became reality. His treasure trove of art, amassed over more than two decades, was partly acquired by the Lower Saxony Foundation and partly donated. The "Dürer Collection of the Konrad Liebmann Foundation in the Lower Saxony Foundation" is now one of the most important art treasures on permanent loan to the Museum of Cultural History.
Old Masters in the "Gustav Stüve Collection"
Art, collecting and passion - they somehow belong together. The history of the painting collection of the Osnabrück district president Gustav Stüve (1833 - 1911) also tells this story. He bequeathed valuable paintings from the 16th to 19th centuries to the city. As chairman of the museum association, Stüve had not only determined the fate of the museum for many years. With his foundation, he also left behind a cultural-political testament that established the current status of the Museumsquartier as an art museum.
