In cooperation with the Kaiserschild Foundation, the Kunsthistorisches Museum is showing a special presentation on the Dutch Baroque painter Pieter Claesz (1597/98-1660), one of the most important representatives of 17th century still life painting.
The non-profit foundation is involved in the fields of education, research and art and, as part of the Kaiserschild Art Defined project, uses digital means to bring important works of art history to life for a wide audience in a new way. At the center of the show are three atmospherically dense still lifes from the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Alte Galerie of the Universalmuseum Joanneum Graz and the Kunst Museum Winterthur, which impressively demonstrate Claesz's masterful direction of light and his fine handling of materiality. The paintings have been digitized in high quality and specially prepared for art education. The originals are shown together with a multimedia table that allows visitors to engage with the still lifes in an interactive and in-depth way. Seven short films also provide exciting insights into the genre of still life, its cultural and historical context, as well as the life and artistic work of Pieter Claesz.
