Art between sea and sky - in the Museum Kunst der Westküste on Föhr, the fascination of coasts, light and space is made tangible.

The Museum Kunst der Westküste (MKdW) is located in the village of Alkersum on the island of Föhr and is dedicated to the art of north-western European coastal regions from the 19th to the 21st century. Founded in 2009 by the family of founder Frederik Paulsen - whose family roots lie in Alkersum - the museum was created as a continuation of the old "Grethjens Gasthof", which was once a meeting place for North German and Danish artists.

Unlike traditional art museums, the MKdW does not have a permanent exhibition, but presents its collections in regularly changing special exhibitions that bring classical and contemporary positions into a lively dialog. Thematically, the focus is on the connection between the coast, the sea and social experience - with works from Germany, Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands. The new building, embedded in the Frisian village environment, creates a modern framework for light, space and art: transitions between interior and exterior space open up, the architecture reflects coastal spaces and landscapes. A garden and landscape references complement the spatial paths - art is not only viewed here, but experienced.

A visit to the MKdW is an invitation: to slow down, to feel, to reflect on the relationship between man and nature. Here, the sea, light and art merge into a harmonious unity - a beacon of culture on Föhr.
