The National Museum is the largest museum in the Czech Republic with a collection-creating, scientific, educational and methodological function. It consists of five specialized and, to a certain extent, independent institutions: Natural History Museum, Historical Museum, Czech Museum of Music, Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures and the National Museum Library.

Do you enjoy traveling through the rural regions of the Czech Republic? Then you've probably often noticed the preserved examples of traditional rural architecture - the log gabled roofs of the North Bohemian farmhouses, the half-timbered farmhouses in the Egerland, the log buildings in Wallachia or the richly painted brick architecture in the Slovácko region.

Its present form is the result of a long evolution that generations of ethnographers, architects and artists have been trying to capture since the end of the 19th century. Back then they only had paper and pencil at their disposal, some perhaps a camera, but even with these limited means they were able to create rich documentary collections that we can use today to learn about traditional architecture, even in combination with the latest computer technology. Let us now unravel the secrets of documenting vernacular architecture from the first half of the 20th century in this exhibition and visit one such "paper village" together.

The exhibition was jointly organized by the Institute of Ethnography of the Czech Academy of Sciences and the Czech Technical University in Prague.
