Reopening after many years of renovation! After six years of technical refurbishment, the Kunstmuseum Mülheim an der Ruhr will reopen on 25 May 2024 and invites you to an all-day festive program from 11 am to 9 pm. Look forward to the return of the colorful masterpieces of classical modernism, the undoubted stars of the diverse collections of the Kunstmuseum Mülheim an der Ruhr. Prints from Pablo Picasso to Andy Warhol, works by artists from the region such as Arthur Kaufmann, Otto Pankok and Dorothee Golz round off the collection profile.
"Powerful colors and formal experiments, expressive drama and rational calculation, cosmic and earthly visions await you in the opening exhibition", this is what the opening exhibition "Brücke, Bauhaus, Blauer Reiter" entices you with.

ONE HOUSE - THREE COLLECTIONS
Together with expressionist paintings from the municipal collection, the collection of Nobel Prize-winning chemist Karl Ziegler and his wife Maria is a cheerful riot of color. Franz Marc's abstract animal portraits, Emil Nolde's vibrant floral motifs and August Macke's landscape watercolors are particularly pleasing to the eye. An open-hearted portrait of a baby by Otto Dix and a simple composition with sailing boats by Lyonel Feininger are an expression of an undisguised "joy in beauty", which was the Ziegler couple's intuitive motive for collecting rather than art-historical considerations. Thanks to the commitment of the Mülheim collector Dr. Karl G. Themel, the museum houses one of the most extensive collections of the socially critical Berlin artist Heinrich Zille.

WILD AT HEART
BRIDGE, BAUHAUS, BLUE RIDER
With the major collection presentation IM HERZEN WILD, the museum's treasures return to the public in new, exciting constellations. For the first time, the works of classical modernism from the Municipal Collection will enter into a direct dialog with the works of the Ziegler Collection in the exhibition Brücke - Bauhaus - Blauer Reiter in order to illuminate art at the beginning of the 20th century in various motivic facets.
The focus is on the artists from the Brücke, Bauhaus and Blauer Reiter movements, who were influential in the development of modern painting in Germany. In a journey through the first five decades of the 20th century, the dynamics with which the movements of the time responded to each other are presented and the simultaneity of the different is made visible through the thematic hanging - animals, flowers, portraits, children, landscapes, figures. With 150 paintings, watercolors and prints, the exhibition highlights the museum's unique artistic selling point and shows once again how fascinating modernism, which has become a classic, is for contemporary viewers.

WILD AT HEART. COLLECTION +
Founded in 1909, the Kunstmuseum Mülheim an der Ruhr is one of the oldest art museums in the Ruhr region. As a place of encounter with art, reflection and inspiration, the museum is now reopening to the public with the two-part collection presentation IM HERZEN WILD. From classical modernism to the latest artistic positions of the present day, the Kunstmuseum Mülheim an der Ruhr is showing the diverse thematic facets of its collection and, with the new acquisitions (including those by the museum's sponsors), is focusing the exhibition on works by female artists. The history of the collection and institution, which spans more than a century, is presented in a way that is comprehensible and transparent to the public. The museum store, run on a voluntary basis by the Förderkreis, supports the museum's projects through civic engagement.

SAMMLUNG + continues the examination of the collection from 1945 onwards with thematic rooms and at the same time opens up the museum to collaborations with artists and (private) collections. Fantastic figurations lead over to imaginary landscapes, graphic masterpieces of American Pop Art look at new horizons, consumer worlds, mass media and current affairs. Far-reaching outgrowths and ramifications propagate from room to room, set points of light, form (atmospheric) spheres and question linguistic images and communication models. With media diversity, the focus is on upheavals, turning points, social coexistence, questions about the future and changes in perspective. Pointed works illustrate the revolutionary power of art and underline Beuys' thesis that "democracy can be funny". The graphics collection juxtaposes original hand drawings, rare, precious sheets from well-known cycles of socially critical graphics and a sketchbook by Heinrich Zille with works by Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen.
