The Musée d'arts de Nantes is the only public collection in France to hold a sculpture by the American Duane Hanson. In its major exhibition in 2023, the museum explores the deeply human and sensitive character of hyperrealist sculpture, a movement that emerged in the 1960s in the United States.
This meticulously realistic figurative art proposes a projection prop, a double, a mirror through the faithful representation of the body, provoking a unique encounter between the visitor (observer) and the figurative sculpture (observed).
Between emotion and fascination, between identification and rejection...
Why is the gaze so strongly unsettled beyond an interest in technical skills? Where does the power of these works come from? Where is the work of art really located? How can the representation of reality appeal to our bodies and emotions to the point of confusion? By modeling the human being in the most realistic materiality, these artists manage to reveal the most immaterial part of the individual: Feelings, thoughts, emotions...
With around thirty works by more than ten international sculptors, some of which have never been shown before, the Musée d'arts de Nantes is putting the spotlight on hyper-realistic sculpture, which has rarely been shown before.
The exhibited artists: Gilles Barbier, Berlinde De Bruyckere, John DeAndrea, Daniel Firman, Duane Hanson, Sam Jink, Tony Matelli, Saana Murtti, Evan Penny, Marc Sijan, Tip Toland
