The "heart in the eyes". Poet Philippe Soupault's formula seems to summarize the humanistic photographic work of Léon Herschritt. As a photographer of the post-war period, he followed in the footsteps of a generation of "reporter-illustrators", spurred on by a flourishing press and dynamic commissions from state organizations. From the Algerian War to the construction of the Berlin Wall, from Africa to the regional visits of President Charles de Gaulle, Herschritt's work offers a journey through the first two decades of the Fifth Republic, between decolonization and the coldness of war.
Focusing on the period from 1958 to 1970, the exhibition presents exceptional prints and unpublished contact sheets that reveal the path of a true photographic talent, celebrated during his lifetime by the entire industry he knew how to make: one of the megaphones.
