The underground world of the Matterhorn Museum - Zermatlantis shows the past of the village of Zermatt. With original houses, a multimedia room and objects found during the first ascent of the Matterhorn.

A visit to the museum is a must for every guest. It shows the development of Zermatt from a mountain farming village to a world-renowned Alpine mountain destination. It is vividly staged with original houses, re-enacted situations of the inhabitants and former Alpine explorers. Here you can also experience what happened on the day of the first ascent on July 14, 1865. The story of triumph and death went around the world. The original broken rope of the first ascenders bears witness to this.

The mountain is calling
In the multivision room you can watch excerpts from Luis Trenker's cult film "The Mountain Calls". The film from 1937/1938 was shot in Zermatt - with a crash scene from the first ascent. The records set by mountaineers on the 4,000-metre peaks in the area are also presented with photos and facts. A relief of the Matterhorn with illuminated lines shows the routes used to climb the Matterhorn.

Best museum presentation
The museum reflects the current state of museum design in an outstanding way. It was opened in 2006. The concept was developed by the company Steiner, Sarnen, whose clients include the Glasi Hergiswil, the Hamburg Harbour Museum and the Swiss National Museum.
